Workshops for DIGI60 2011
Workshops are available to any interested participants, not just Digi60 Entrants. The content of the Workshops will be valuable, but so will the networking opportunities throughout the day !
Workshops will be held at Algonquin College’s Woodroffe Campus. Our registration table will be set up in front of room T102. From there, you will be directed to your class rooms.

ROOM 1
9:00am GRANT WRITING FOR MEDIA ARTISTS – Penny McCann – SAW Video – 3 hours 12 spots
This popular workshop is designed to help media artists represent their projects clearly and concisely. Veteran filmmaker and SAW Video Director Penny McCann will take emerging film and video makers through the process of applying to art councils and cultural agencies for funding. Focus for the workshop will be on upcoming grants to the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council.
Participants will learn the do’s and don’ts of grant writing (aka “Penny’s Principles of Grant Writing”) and see examples of successful proposals, complete with budgets, schedules, and project descriptions. They will learn about the jury process and how to effectively present support material.

Penny McCann has been making films and videos since 1990. Her work, which ranges from dramatic to experimental, has been widely broadcast and exhibited at numerous festivals and galleries nationally and internationally. Over the years, Penny has received numerous grants for her work, most recently from the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Ottawa, and Bravo!FACT. A long-time member of SAW Video, Penny became director in January 2004. In 2007, in recognition of her contribution to the Ottawa media arts community, Penny was awarded the Victor Tolgesy Award for achievement in the arts.

This workshop will provide both demonstrative and hands-on instruction in both dramatic and documentary script breakdown and scheduling. These methods can be applied to any type of complicated production based on a script or storyboard. Come prepared with your questions. Topics covered will include manual and software methods for:

3:00 pm APPLYING TO FESTIVALS – Sharon Katz – SAW Video – 2 hours 12 spots
The Agony and the Ecstasy
Congratulations, you just finished a film. Now what do you do… put it in a drawer, or send it out to festivals? No one I know puts it in a drawer.
Why send your film to festivals?
- Audiences who love the kind of film you make get to see your film.
- Your film might get picked up by a distributor.
- Festival directors scouting for films may invite your film to their festival.

Sharon Katz Bio
Sharon Katz is a visual artist working in animated and still imagery. Her day job is pursuing the heady elixir of art, whatever that is at any given moment. Her work can be found screening at film festivals, fixed to the walls of various corporations and institutions, and floating around in cyberspace.

9:00am ACTING FOR THE CAMERA – Claudia Jurt – ACT Ottawa – 3 hours
CLASS IS NOW FULL
The aim of this course is to give the actor a better understanding of how the industry works and to be better prepared & more confident when going to auditions. Special focus will be given to:
- Working in front of the camera with naturalness and confidence
- Learning about the film & television casting process,
- Preparing for the audition process and learn about the value of self-promotion.
- Discovering what Casting Directors and Talent Agents ‘look for’
1:00pm DIRECTING ACTORS – Claudia Jurt – ACT Ottawa – 2 hours 12 spots
One of the most important relationships on set is between the Actor and the Director. Finding the balance between the Director’s vision and trusting the Actor’s instincts can be delicate. This workshop will examine the dynamic of the relationship and help to equip both sides with the tools to work towards the best results. This workshop will be TARGETED at directors, but actors will also benefit if they attend as they will better understand the Director’s point of view.

Nathan is an Ottawa based filmmaker and a Canadian Film Centre alumni who has served as a Jury member on numerous international screenplay competitions.
ROOM 3
10:00am WORKING WITH LENSES – Karl Roeder – 2 hours 12 spots
Karl is one of the foremost cinematographers in the region. This workshop will cover the technical aspect of working with lenses and light, but it is the technique that creates the art. As Karl says, “What I love most about my work is the creative and technical stuff of moving pictures… the visual engineering that evokes emotion in the viewer.”
This workshop will focus on cameras with removable lenses, and participants will be encouraged to bring their own cameras and lenses as part of a hands on experience.

1:00pm DSLR ACCESSORIES – Jith Paul – Digi60 – 2 hours 15 spots
One of the great advantages of the DSLR revolution is the wide variety of tools that companies have developed for these cameras. Jith has worked extensively with DSLR technology and has fantastic insight into the different technologies, accessories and add-ons that are available. He will cover a variety of these options, including hands on demonstrations of how they work, and how they improve the quality of the footage you are creating.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras.

10:00am DOCUMENTARY STORYTELLING with Susan Stranks 2 hours 25 spots
Think you have a great idea for a documentary? You’ve already started shooting and are drowning in footage? Can’t find the voice? Let veteran producer and filmmaker, Susan Stranks, help you structure your doc. Whether you’re still in development or struggling with your rough cut, this 2 hour workshop will give you valuable guidelines to simplify the process of effective storytelling. Presented in partnership with DOC Ottawa-Gatineau.

12:00pm Tom Shoebridge – Free lunch time session
Tom has played a huge part in developing the filmmaking community here in the Ottawa area. He was the driving force behind the 28 years of the Canadian Screen Training Centre and its flagship event, the Summer Institute of Film and Television.
His talk will focus on why Canadians must make films, the challenges we face, and what we can do about the future.
This lunchtime session is open to anyone who has registered for any of our workshops throughout the day.
