A conversation with filmmakers and producers that will discuss how authentic voices and representation are essential when producing content, and the impact that this representation has in storytelling and media dissemination. A short Q&A will follow.

Hingman Leung

Hingman Leung is an Ottawa-based filmmaker with a passion for telling stories that bridge different ways of seeing the world, specializing in telling stories through the lens of culture and food. Her first short documentary on food waste in China (2015) received the Public Ethnography Award. Since then, she’s produced a variety of video content for a growing list of Ottawa organizations, businesses, and not-for-profits including Apartment 613, Hidden Harvest Ottawa, Business Improvement Associations, and Lisgar Collegiate Institute.

With a deep commitment to representation in media, Hingman founded and directs what is now 613TV on Apartment 613. Her vision is to foster a community of visual storytellers in Ottawa who can showcase the hidden gems of the city in an authentic way, through its diversity of culture, food, and experiences.

Zainab Muse

Zainab Muse is an award-winning entrepreneur, author, and filmmaker. She's the creator and producer of ‘Creatorland’, now airing on CBC. Zainab is currently in production for her second documentary, ‘Know Her Name’, following the impact that three iconic filmmakers had on the representation of minorities and feminism in film.

Jean-François Dufault

Jean-François Dufault has been working within the film and television community since 1995. He has produced and directed many short films, including “Slipping Sideways” which won the Audience Award at the 2010 Montreal 24 hour film race. During the 2017 spring edition of Digi60, his film Premier lancé won Best Film and Best Directing. In 2009, JF leaped into acting, taking classes to better understand the reality of being in front of the camera and to better his directing skills. In March of 2020, he launched a new YouTube series called “How I Got Out” with 8 episodes. This project showcases his coming out story, how he hid who he really was from his family and friends. The goal? For people struggling like he did to know that they’re not alone. Season 2 of How I Got Out is launching shortly.

Maissa Houri - Moderator

Maissa Houri is the Digi60 Filmmakers’ Festival Director of Womxn’s Industry. She is an Arab-Canadian award-winning filmmaker and actress based out of Ottawa, Canada, who attended Montreal’s Vanier College Theatre and Film Program. Maissa recently released an award-winning web series that challenged the norms of society by telling the story of a sexually freed Muslim woman living with her gay roommate. Her second short film “Inara” has warranted her many directing awards. Maissa is passionate about telling stories from the perspective of being a first-generation Arab-Canadian and shedding light on the misrepresentations of Arabs and Muslims on TV and film.
