bur

Directed By Ken Godmere

I was sitting in an actual wedding reception when the Digi60 “catch” was announced. The next day, I wrote the script for “bur”.

Because the script came out as a raw and realistically awkward human moment, we decided to shoot it in a raw and realistically awkward way. We had our D.O.P. shooting as the ‘wedding videographer’ on camera one.

We gave five of our wedding reception guest actors iPhones and asked them to shoot as they would at a real wedding reception. And a seventh camera was locked-off on a tripod, shooting through the bar to the head table in the reception. This brought us to being able to shoot the entire film in a single take for continuity, emotional connection and flow. (except the specialty shots for the opening wine glass, the P.O.V. with the flashbacks, and the compression shot on the kiss at the end).

On the third take, an accidental dropping of the glass of scotch at the lectern, spontaneously changed the emotion of the entire room, and we went with that and wrapped in one afternoon. (Ironically, all that time we saved in the shoot was needed in the editing, as the iPhone qualities had to be stabilized, tweaked and colour-corrected – something I’m really not very good at.)
